Metaphysical poetry is a type of poetry that combines deep thought, philosophy, wit and unusual comparisons. It became popular in the seventeenth century. John Donne is one of the most famous metaphysical poets.

Metaphysical poets often write about love, religion, death and human life. They use metaphysical conceits, which are unusual and surprising comparisons between two very different things. Their poetry also contains arguments, clever ideas, paradoxes and wordplay.

For example, in John Donne's A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning, two lovers are compared to the two legs of a compass. This unusual comparison is a famous metaphysical conceit.

2. Discuss the Conceits Used by John Donne in The Canonization

John Donne uses several unusual and intellectual conceits in The Canonization. The poem presents the love between two lovers as something sacred.

The most important conceit is the comparison of the lovers to saints. Donne suggests that although their love may seem foolish to others, they can become “saints” of love. He also compares their love to religious worship and martyrdom.

Another important conceit is the comparison of the lovers to flies and tapers. Their love is shown as something that may consume them, just as a flame consumes a candle. Donne also suggests that their love can produce something lasting through poetry.

Thus, Donne's conceits are unusual, intellectual and imaginative. They make The Canonization a fine example of metaphysical poetry.

Leo Tolstoy is especially famous for presenting realistic characters and situations. His stories show human emotions, moral problems and social life in a believable manner. Therefore, realism helps readers understand real human life and society.
